Experience the rewarding combination of community medicine and island life
If you are a medical provider, please consider joining our pilot project this summer. We are specifically looking for MDs, DOs, NPs and PAs with family medicine, emergency medicine, or primary care experience who are CPR/AED certified. We anticipate that this will be a unique and exciting opportunity professionally as well as a huge contribution to the Swan's Island community.
What you will provide for Swan's Island
You will see patients with minor injuries and illness at our free walk-in first aid station, 2 hours a day, Monday through Friday. On occasion, if a situation is deemed more serious, you will contact island EMS and help coordinate transporting the patient to the mainland for further evaluation and treatment.
You may be asked to assist our EMS team if required for triage of emergency calls. There are generally an average of 15 emergency medical calls over the course of the summer.
What Swan's Island will provide for you
Technical details
Licensing:
Out of state providers would need to get a full or temporary Maine license.
Malpractice:
If your own medical malpractice liability insurance does not cover volunteer work, SIFA's liability insurance becomes your primary malpractice carrier covering your time on Swan's Island.
Scope:
The First Aid Station has a well-equipped exam room and first aid supplies but only limited medications on hand. The walk-in clinic is NOT intended to take the place of one's primary care, and we do not treat chronic illnesses or renew patient medications.
